Beyond Endpoint Technology: Why You Should Leverage Security Experts for MDR

The world was already seeing an ever-expanding perimeter of the corporate network and a born-in-the-cloud workforce when the COVID pandemic hit. Instead of derailing any of those pre-existing trends, the events of 2020 only served to accelerate them. Suddenly, a record number of companies, their employees, and even the self-employed realized that if they were going to keep working and earning a paycheck, they were going to have to do that outside of a traditional office. This never would have been possible in the early days of the Internet, when you couldn’t even stream a video without killing your first-generation DSL line. Luckily, we live in the age of bandwidth and cloud computing. Today, you can stream an entire movie from Netflix, while your kids are on a Google Classroom video chat with their teachers, your Ring doorbell camera is keeping an eye on your front porch, and Alexa is reminding you to order flowers for your anniversary – yet, the bandwidth police aren’t showing up at your house. You’re just one of a hundred houses in your neighborhood doing the exact same thing and your ISP (Internet Services Provider) is cool with it.

Of course, when it comes to security, you have to see bandwidth not only as a way for all the good stuff to come in, but also as the perfect conduit for the bad stuff. The more stuff you stream, the more devices that get deployed, the larger the attack surface, the better the chances of finding a way in – it only makes sense. Fortunately, when it comes to protecting your newly expanded corporate IT presence, a few things have remained relatively constant. These include 1) that every user has an “endpoint device” or two that they depend on for getting their work done, 2) that endpoint remains the primary target of most attacks, and 3) we’ve become extremely good at protecting those endpoints.

Managed Detection and Response

Managed Detection and Response or MDR, as the cool kids refer to it, is all the rage these days. We’re essentially replacing old fashioned, antiquated signature-based anti-virus with a modernized agent that understands what your endpoint should be doing and what it should not be doing, allowing it to detect bad behaviors. We then compare those behaviors with what has been seen and/or reported by others in the threat intelligence community, allowing us to draw even better-informed conclusions. At that point, we’re not just throwing up some red flags, we’re also taking action. The “R” part, which is for Response, is a critical component.  It’s one thing to have an alarm system in your home – it’s a completely different thing to have an alarm service that also dispatches the cops within seconds or minutes. I like to think of our MDR as taking things one step further – we notify our analysts (the cops), but we automatically start smacking the bad guy across the back of the head, search him and take away his weapons, and lock him up in the closet.

Speaking of analysts, the thing that really sets TrueMDR apart from much of our competition is the analyst involvement. We’ll never be an “alert you and forget you service”. How effective is your solution if you just get a barrage of notifications and develop alert fatigue? We believe in leveraging AI and empowering our people with great technology to reduce the noise, get rid of the false positives and the false negatives, so that our analysts can focus on the real threats that could affect your business. Then, we work with you to mitigate those threats, and we deliver all of this from our SOC2, Type II certified, 24x7x365 (366 on leap years – we never take a day off), Security Operations Center

At the end of the day, I like to say that TrueMDR is like ibuprofen for most organizations’ security headaches. It’s probably not the only thing you’ll ever need, and if you’re using a lot of ibuprofen, you probably have some other issues you need to proactively deal with – but it offers immediate pain relief and (this is where the ibuprofen analogy ends) gives us great visibility into your security posture, so we can then help you through the steps of building a solid IT, security and compliance program as your organization matures.
